Personal notebook / Linux
My Linux setup.
A few useful pieces of my everyday environment, and a record of moving carefully from an old Ubuntu laptop to a new desktop.
The everyday pieces
- Shell: Zsh, Oh My Zsh, a Powerlevel10k prompt and syntax highlighting.
- Development: Git for projects and configuration history; Bun is part of the shell environment.
- Desktop: selected terminal and desktop preferences, with package inventories to make rebuilding less of a guessing game.
Moving one piece at a time
I am keeping the old machine intact while bringing settings across in small batches. Each batch gets a source, a destination, checksums and a Git commit. A saved setting is not the same thing as a tested setting on the new machine.
- Capture the existing configuration.
- Compare it with the new PC and review dependencies.
- Apply one selected change and test it.
- Record the result before moving on.
15 October 2026: the first shell and desktop configuration snapshot is captured. Applying those settings on the new PC is still pending.
A small public view
This page contains selected notes. Personal configuration, machine-specific details and account credentials are not published here.
What I keep track of
Shell files, selected application preferences, installed package inventories, original configuration history, file checksums and the outcome of each migration batch.
System settings and remaining application configurations are reviewed separately before they move.
