I read The Player of Games in 2025, and it still feels sharp because Iain M. Banks uses a game-obsessed protagonist to make power, status, artificial intelligence, and post-scarcity politics feel physical.

Gurgeh is not a simple heroic outsider. He comes from the Culture, a decentralized utopia that looks at Azad's game-shaped empire and sees the greed, sexism, hierarchy, and domination that humans keep rebuilding.

The book works because the game is not decoration. It is the empire's operating system, a way to encode class, violence, and ambition into something that looks elegant from a distance.
